Wangdue Phodrang is a town located in western Bhutan and is famous for its diverse climatic conditions which usually range from sub-tropical forests in the South to the cool regions in the North. This town has a thread of various ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples which enchants any visitor to this area. This place is rich in natural resources and therefore is a home for many animals including Red Pandas, Leopards and Tigers.   • Wangdue Phodrang Town: This is a small town which is mainly a shopping centre for the people of the district.   • Gangtey Monastery: This monastery is an important historical monastery of Nyingma school of Buddhism. It was established in the 17th century and displays the fine Bhutanese architecture. Gangtey treks are popular and attract many tourists since the monastery offers the breath taking views over the Gangtey valley and the mountains beyond.
  • Phobjika Valley: The picturesque Phobjika valley is a glacial valley which has rich diversity of flora and fauna. This place is particularly popular since the Black-necked cranes migrate and roost here in the winter season and tourists can easily spot them. The luscious green valleys are spectacular and is a must visit for nature lovers.

  • Langdra Nye: This place is considered to be the one of the most sacred sites of Bhutan. It is also known by the name The Red Bull Sacred Site since their Guru Rinpoche subdued a charged red bull here. It is located near Bai village in Wangdue Phodrang. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche meditated here and his thumb print embedded on a rock is placed for display.
  • The Chimi Lhakhang: This is an old monastery which is located on a scenic hilltop and is visible from the Lobesa valley. Visitors generally walk down through the panoramic agricultural fields of paddy from Punakha district to reach here. This monastery is dedicated to maverick saint Drukpa Kinley.

Cultural Festivals:

The most awaited festival of the year is the Black Necked Crane Festival which is held in Phobjika valley with the intention of spreading awareness about the cranes migrating in the winter season and their preservation. This festival is the most popular and unique one in Bhutan. Local school children participate in this festival and presents masked dances, songs and plays. The program is attended by large number of locals and tourists every year.
